Steve Wooten, KC0QMU, the Emergency Coordinator, and John Wies, N0UFB,
District C Official Emergency Station, presided
over the monthly St. Louis County
ARES® meeting held on
April 19, 2004.
John gave a brief history of his involvement with St. Louis County
ARES® as an Official Emergency
Station. He said that he would continue helping until Steve, the new
EC, felt comfortable with the position.
John said that several potential served agencies were talking to the group
about putting amateur radio in their emergency plans.
John recommended that all ARES®
members learn first aid and CPR. He also suggested that they learn
and develop home preparedness plans. He said that members should take
the ARECC Level I (Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Course), as
that describes what we do. John also recommended CERT training. He listed
a variety of training resources, including an ICS CD (Incident Command
System), online FEMA courses, and ARECC in its various forms.
John said that he would be talking to the Florissant Police Department
(Florissant EMA) next week about
ARES® involvement.
John mentioned, but did not name, an area major health care provider with
whom the group was developing a MOU (Memorandum Of Understanding).
Chuck Wehking, KC0QKS, asked if he should contact the Mehlville Fire
Protection District. John tentatively said yes.
Gary Hoffman, KB0H, said that the recommended amount of training was
quite daunting and asked where we should start.. what single task
should we try to do right away. John said that we should start on
our own personal preparedness.
Fred Langeneckert, W0UX, District Emergency Coordinator for Missouri
ARES® District C, said that we
should all try to recruit more members.
Steve had a list of 2 meter nets in the area. He asked team members
to check into those nets and mention both the St. Louis County
ARES® net and the group's Web site.
The group will meet once a month on the third Monday of the month
at 7:30 PM.
