Steve Wooten, KC0QMU, the Emergency Coordinator, presided
over the monthly St. Louis County
ARES® meeting held on
May 17, 2004.
Steve and John Weis, N0UFB, noted that Creve Coeur Days were being held
soon. They said that REACT was handling security, and that perhaps we
should approach them about working with
ARES®.
John said that he would like to talk to the Monsanto Amateur Radio Club,
and Steve said that he would try to arrange it.
John and Gary Hoffman, KB0H, gave a brief overview of their dealings
with a potential served agency.
Steve and Bob Ernst, KC0NRK, talked a little about the Hazelwood CERT
organization, which is called "NEST". Bob is currently taking the
Hazelwood training course and showed the "bucket" of emergency supplies
that had been provided.
Steve said that Maryland Heights, Creve Coeur, and Olivette were working
together to develop CERT teams.
ARES® ID cards were discussed.
Steve said that he had ordered a number of ARECC Level I books (Amateur
Radio Emergency Communications Course), but that they were currently
out of stock.
Steve mentioned getting a table for ARES®
at the next series of local area hamfests.
Steve asked if anyone had any ideas about recruiting more members.
Max Slover, K0AZV, said that Skywavz in St. Charles had a small stack
of ARES® applications. It was
suggested that both Slywavz and Gateway Electronics be approached about
allowing the group to place application forms.
John said that business cards and novelty items such as "hail gauges"
could help promote the group.
There was a discussion about the status of the St. Louis City
ARES® group.
Bob gave a presentation on "go bags", including handouts.
Chuck Wehking, KC0QKS, volunteered to talk about portable antennas
at the next meeting.
John gave a presentation of preparedness, and handed out samples of
paracord, MREs, and battery holders.
