Steve Wooten, KC0QMU, the Emergency Coordinator, presided
over the monthly St. Louis County
ARES® meeting held on
December 20, 2004.
Steve passed out a calendar of events taking place in 2005. There being
new people attending, he had everyone introduce themselves.
Steve said that he would like to see more announcements promoting
ARES® made on other nets during 2005.
John, N0UFB, suggested putting up a notice at Winterfest listing all
members of ARES® and saying,
"If you are not on this list, we do not have your application." This
idea was later changed so that the list would be posted on the Web site.
Steve asked that everyone make sure his/her contact information was
up to date, especially email addresses.
Someone asked how ARES® was
funded. Steve replied that it was funded by donations and by sales
made at hamfests. At that point one attendee made a cash donation and another
donated a handheld radio.
Steve said that a St. Louis County ARES®
Operations Manual was in the works and that portions of it would be
available on the Web site.
Gary, KB0H, suggested possible events that the group might hold,
including -
- a message handling event
- a multi-county call out
- a problem solving event
- an AREC Course
Max, K0AZV, and Gary, KB0H, both brought up the idea of having an
ARES® table at local community
events. Steve said he had already looked into it and found that
such tables cost a fair amount of money.
John gave away a field antenna mast stand.
Kurt, KB0ZNJ, asked why there were separate City and County
ARES® organizations. (Answer: The
distribution of ARES® organizations
through the state was decided at the Missouri Section level, which
decided to go by counties. Since St. Louis City is not within St. Louis
County, it was assigned its own ARES®
group.) He also asked who is supposed to take responsibility for
contacting whom in an emergency. (Answer: There will be a call-out list.)
