Steve Wooten, KC0QMU, the Emergency Coordinator, presided
over the monthly St. Louis County
ARES® meeting held on
April 18, 2005.
Steve said that he had sent messages to most of the area
amateur radio clubs asking that they mention
ARES®
in their newsletters or on their nets.
Steve also said he was about to send a survey and questionaire to
the trustees of about fifty area repeaters.
Steve mentioned that the Planning Committee has meetings every
other month and is discussing quarterly exercises.
Steve said that at one time ARES®
was able to obtain used batteries from a hospital, which were later
sold to generate revenue. He is hoping to find hospitals or
other agencies that would consider such donations.
Gary Hoffman, KB0H, said that the Planning Committee was working
on some ideas for field exercises. They would like to hold
a search-and-rescue event, but feel that there are not enough
members to make it worthwhile at this time. They are, however,
considering a problem-solving field exercise.
Steve said that an "Atomic Clock" (a clock tuned to the
National Standards time station WWV) had been donated and would
be given as a door prize at the next general meeting.
Craig Klimczak, K4LSU, was the guest speaker. He gave a presentation
on Near Vertical Incident Skywave (NVIS) antennas. He showed
a portable / collapsible 75 meter NVIS antenna that he had built.
