Minutes of the October 17, 2005 Meeting

Steve Wooten, KC0QMU, the Emergency Coordinator, presided at the monthly meeting of the St. Louis County ARES® group on October 17, 2005.

Steve said that membership was currently up to 49 people. He showed a sample of a promotional postcard that he had started mailing to newly licensed amateur radio operators in the area.

Steve said that no DEC (District Emergency Coordinator) had yet been chosen, possibly because one of the candidates was also running for the post of Midwest Division Manager.

Steve said that articles of incorporation had been drafted and that the ARRL was presently looking over the papers.

Steve said that we may not hold a December meeting.

Steve gave a financial report and said that currently all funds come from donations of cash and items that can be resold.

Steve noted that the ARRL was holding a toy drive for victims of the Gulf Coast hurricanes.

Steve mentioned that the group would have a table at the Halloween Hamfest and invited everyone to drop by to say hello.

Gary Hoffman, KB0H, gave a brief summary of the R.E.T. (Resource Evaluation Test) that had been held on October 1, 2005. He also asked for volunteers for future exercises. Steve then passed out thank-you certificates to those attendees who had participated in the R.E.T.

Paul Hinrichs, K0TPY, stated that he had obtained a permit from the City of Florissant before setting up his R.E.T. field station. He said that a few city officials had come by and had been impressed.

Steve said that he'd had promotional material at his R.E.T. field station and that he'd been visited by hams who had not know that there was a function ARES® group in the county.

Steve said that he'd had several communications with the St. Louis County Police captain in charge of EMA.

There was an open discussion of how some disaster scenes had not required any identification from volunteer amateur radio operators, whereas others had demanded a lot of identification.

Ben Shipman, W0BEN, gave a slide presentation showing conditions in the Gulf Coast area, where he had worked as a volunteer communicator.
