Steve Wooten, KC0QMU, the Emergency Coordinator, presided at the monthly
meeting of the
St. Louis County ARES® group on
February 13, 2006.
Steve said that St. Louis County
ARES® had a table at Winterfest 2006, and
had asked ARES® members who stopped by
to sign up for an "attendance prize". He announced the two prize winners.
Steve said that he had attended a SEMA (State Emergency Management Agency)
conference, and that 40% to 50% of the discussions were about Amateur Radio
participation. Chuck Wehking, KC0QKS, had also attended the conference.
Chuck said that everything SEMA wants from Amateur Radio operators are
things that the St. Louis County
ARES® group is already doing.
Steve said that the Section Manager and Section Emergency Coordinator had
asked him to make sure that anyone wishing to bring up general
ARES® matters or Amateur Radio issues
at the St. Louis County ARES®
meetings be allowed to do so. He then asked if anyone had anything they
would like to discuss.
Gary Hoffman, KB0H, the Assistant Emergency Coordinator - Operations
thanked everyone who had signed up to participate in the upcoming
Aftershock exercise. He promised that they would all learn something and
come out of the exercise better prepared to handle emergencies.
Craig Klimczak, K4LSU, said that the group would like to have 20 minute
presentations about general radio topics at every meeting. He called these
presentations "Radio 101". He passed around a list of topics that had
been suggested and asked if anyone would volunteer to talk about any
of them. Four people agreed to take a topic, and Craig signed them up
for specific meetings. (Note: See the Calendar
of Events to see when various topics will be discussed.)
Steve mentioned that there are two upcoming events for which Amateur
Radio operators have been asked to volunteer, the Hundred Acre Wood
Road Rally and the Spirit of St. Louis Marathon. (Again, see the
Calendar of Events for dates.)
Craig Hirsh, K0CMH, gave the third of his training presentations leading
up to the Aftershock exercise. This presentation was about net procedures.
Craig and Gary handed out instructions and exercise kits to all
attendees who had signed up for Aftershock. Those people who had signed
up for Aftershock but could not attend the meeting will receive their
kits in the mail.
Jim Conley, N0OBG, announced that there was now a St. Louis County
Amateur Radio Emergency Service, Inc. (Note: SLCARES is a corporation
set up to provide support to
St. Louis County ARES®.)
