Prior to the meeting, a demonstration of field stations was held in
the parking lot. Bruce Hemming, KC0VIF; Craig Hirsh, K0CMH; and Ed Harris,
KC0UKR had set up working stations
Steve Wooten, KC0QMU, the Emergency Coordinator,
presided at the monthly meeting of the
St. Louis County ARES® group on
May 8, 2006.
ARES® applications,
information about the ARECC courses, and free message form pads available
to anyone who wanted them. Packages of Anderson Powerpoles were available
for $5.
Steve instroduced the guest speaker, Art Goodall, KC0KNU.
Art described a proposed ARES®
District C RRT (Rapid Response Team). It would be deployed anywhere
in Dictrict C, or even elsewhere in Missouri or Illinois, during time
of emergency.
Steve said that St. Louis County ARES®
currently had 53 members.
He reminded everyone that the Dayton Hamfest was coming up on
May 19 - 21, 2006. He said that our ARES®
group would have a table at the Washington Hamfest on July 16, the
St. Charles Hamfest on August 20, and the Halloween Hamfest on October 28.
Steve briefly described the group's Planning Committee and said that
any of the group's members who were interested could join the Committee.
Steve said that the speakers for the upcoming meetings would be -
- June: Jim Conley, N0OBG will talk about Safety
- July: Craig Hish, K0CMH will talk about Antenna Construction
- August: Ed Harris, KC0UKR will talk about Field Stations
Steve said that the group would be performing a repeater test on
May 10, 2006. The repeater being tested is 147.210 (no tone). The
test will take place immediately after the regular
ARES® net. All amateurs are invited
to participate in both the regular net and the repeater test.
Steve mentioned that the group would be holding a simplex exercise on
Saturday June 3, 2006.
Steve said that the St. Louis County ARES®
Web site has a "Resources page", which will have a variety
of ancillary information of use to the group's members. Currently there
is a repeater guide on the page, but we hope to add information on
where to obtain various preparedness equipment. Steve asked anyone
who had such information to forward it to him so that it could be placed
on the Web site.
Gary Hoffman, KB0H, the Assistant Emergency Coordinator - Operations,
said that the group now had a Field Station Team. He described the
function of the Team, which is to assist group members in designing
and creating their own field stations. He said that Ed Harris, KC0UKR,
had accepted the position of leader of the Team.
Craig Hirsh, K0CMH, briefly described "The Day the Repeaters Died", which
is the name of the simplex exercise being held on June 3, 2006.
Jim Conley, N0OBG, said that the ARECC level 3 course had recently
changed and now included more information about NIMS (the National
Incident Management System).
Eric Bueneman, N0UIH, recently gave a presentation at SIUE on
"Ham Radio in the Cultural Landscape". He said he was asked many questions
after his presentation.
Steve said that he hoped to compile a list of the local Field Day sites
and make it available soon.
Jim stated that more volunteers were needed for the MS-150 Bike Tour
in September.
