Steve Wooten, KC0QMU, the Emergency Coordinator
presided over the monthly meeting of the
St. Louis County ARES® group on
January 8, 2007.
Steve mentioned that the group currently had 64 members and was trying to
recruit more. He said that the group now had a served agency, that the
served agency had purchased amateur radio transceivers and wanted the
group to practice on them regularly.
Steve said that the group planned to do four exercises this year and
hold another digital workshop.
Steve noted that the group would have tables at Winterfest, the St. Charles
Hamfest, the Washington Hamfest, and the Halloween Hamfest. He said that
there was a possibility that the group might also have a table at the
Egyptian Radio Club Hamfest.
Steve solicited ideas for presentations at the general meetings.
Steve announced that the group would be holding a repeater test on
443.550 (+) (no tones) immediately after the regular net on Wednesday,
January 10, 2007.
Craig Hirsh, K0CMH, the AEC - Planning and Development said that this year
there would be four exercises plus special events such as the digital
workshop. He said that the first exercise would involve simplex and
would be designed so that participants could do it from home. If they wish
and weather permits, they may self-deploy to field locations.
Craig also noted that anyone trying to recruit new members for the group
should mention that we are doing a lot of fun things.
Eric Bueneman, N0UIH, said that he would like to see events that give
us more practice in setting up and tearing down field stations.
Steve said that he would be getting together with the Field Station Team
to discuss what items are critical to an effective field station.
Mark Biernacki, KB5YZY, said that he would like to see digital modes and
HF band usage during the group's next Simulated Emergency Test. He also
wondered about connecting up with a distant
ARES® group during the S.E.T.
He also suggested working Winlink into the test.
Steve noted that The Missouri Section
ARES® Web site has an operations
manual on it that encourages the use of Winlink.
Craig said that the Missouri Section
ARES® Web site mentions a digital
net.
Gary Hoffman, KB0H, said that he believed that was an old, defunct net,
but could not be sure.
Jim Conley, N0OBG, mentioned that there were now digital voice repeaters
in the St. Louis area.
Jim gave a presentation on the Global Positioning Satellite system.
