Steve Wooten, KC0QMU, the Emergency Coordinator
presided over the monthly meeting of the
St. Louis County ARES® group on
May 14, 2007. The Meeting was held at Old Bonhomme School.
Steve said that he had given a presentation about
ARES®
to the St. Louis and Suburban Radio Club on May 11, 2007. He also said
that the president of SLSRC had signed an MOU (Memorandum Of Understanding)
with St. Louis County ARES® regarding
the use of the 146.850 repeater during emergencies.
Steve said that he hopes to have the repeater make automatic announcements
regarding ARES® nets.
Steve said that he would be contacting inactive members of St. Louis
County ARES® to see if he could stir
some interest in the group's current activities. He urged all members
to help with recruiting efforts.
Steve gave an update on the VAMC (Veterans Administration Medical Center).
He said that feedline for an amateur radio station would be installed in
the Jefferson Barracks Hospital shortly. Feedline had already been installed
in the Cochran Hospital but it had been accidentally damaged.
Steve said that St. Louis County ARES®
now has a club call sign, N0ARS.
A debriefing for the simplex multi-net exercise held on April 21, 2007
was scheduled to be held during this meeting. Only a small number of the
exercise participants were able to make the meeing, however, so the
debriefing was postponed. Those few who were at the meeting did give their
general impressions of the exercise. Most were surprised at how propagation
characteristics varied between relatively close frequencies.
Steve announced that the rest of the St. Louis County
ARES® meetings this year would be
held at the Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital. The Hospital has requested,
however, that we not make any transmissions greater than 5 watts while
inside the building.
Steve said that there were tentative plans to hold a picnic and field
station demonstration in October 2007.
Paul Doran, KB0VTK, described the National Weather Service's efforts to
get weather spotter information from outlying Missouri and Illinois
counties via linked amateur radio repeaters.
