Steve Wooten, KC0QMU, the Emergency Coordinator
presided over the monthly meeting of the
St. Louis County ARES® group on
June 9, 2008. The Meeting was held at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital.
Steve noted that the group now has 78 members.
Steve said that he would like to perform a hospital-to-hospital test
of the amateur radio stations at Cochran Hospital and Jefferson Barracks
Hospital. He is awaiting permission from the Veterans Administration
Medical Center, plus a date and time when they will allow the test to
take place.
Steve said that the group would be holding an ARECC (Amateur Radio
Emergency Communications Course) Level 1 class beginning on June 26, 2008.
Interested parties should contact Gary Hoffman, KB0H, at
kb0h@arrl.net.
Steve described the purpose of the Planning Committee and invited
interested members to join.
Steve said that the group is currently planning two exercises, a digital
exercise and a UHF exercise.
Steve said that the group had a table at the EgyptianFest held a few days ago
and would have tables at the Washington Hamfest in July, the St. Charles
Hamfest in August, and the Halloween Hamfest in October.
Steve then gave a presentation on the FEMA and SEMA courses and Web sites.
He explained how to register for and take courses. Some are Web-based,
some are download-and-study-at-your-own-pace, and some are live courses.
If you are accepted into a live SEMA course, SEMA will pay for your
lodging if you have to travel over 50 miles to attend. Web sites of
interest are sema.dps.mo.gov and
training.dps.mo.gov. FEMA and
SEMA courses are free.
