Steve Wooten, KC0QMU, the Emergency Coordinator
presided over the monthly meeting of the
St. Louis County ARES® group on
October 13, 2008. The Meeting was held at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital.
Steve said that St. Louis County ARES®
now had 84 members.
Steve said that he had no recent news regarding the Veterans Administraion
Medical Center.
Steve said he was looking for more people to join the St. Louis County
ARES® Planning Committee.
Steve handed out wallet-sized laminated card containing the groups's
operating frequencies. The cards were created by Steve Schmitz, W0SJS.
Steve inquired to see which members had not yet received St. Louis County
ARES® ID cards. The cards are valid
until March 2010, but Steve is seeking approval from the ARRL for a newly
designed card.
Steve talked about the Field Station Demonstration and Simulated Emergency
Test held on October 4, 2008. He said that the event had 12 participants and
10 visitors. Steve, W0SJS, made 13 contacts using CW and Gary, KB0H, made
9 contacts using PSK31. Steve will submit the information to the DEC, SET,
and to the ARRL.
Steve said that the group would hold four exercises next year, the last
probably being another S.E.T. in the field.
Steve said that the group would have a table at the Halloween Hamfest.
Ed Harris, KC0UKR, showed "ammo-can" boxes that had been converted into
deployment carrying cases for transceivers. He and Mark Biernacki, KB5YZY,
were selling the boxes, transceiver mounting boards, and cigarette-lighter
to Powerpole adaptors.
Craig Klimczak, K4LSU, gave a presentation about the Missouri Emergency
Packet Network. He explained what it was, what software and hardware was
needed, and how to connect and operate on the Network. You may view his
