Steve Wooten, KC0QMU, the Emergency Coordinator
presided over the monthly meeting of the
St. Louis County ARES® group on
January 12, 2009. The Meeting was held at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital.
Steve said that St. Louis County ARES®
now had 87 members.
Steve said that the Veterans Administraion Medical Center North County
Clinic now had an antenna mounted.
Steve asked for more volunteers to join the Planning Committee.
Steve said that St. Louis County ARES®
would hold four exercises in 2009.
- February 28, 2009: Message handling exercise.
This will be done via repeaters rather than simplex. There is
information about message handling on the Web site.
- May 2, 2009: Deployment exercise.
Rain date = May 3, 2009. Participants will be called via the repeater
and given a staging location. Once there, they will be sent to other
sites to set up and operate. There was a rumor of food.
- October 10, 2009: Queeny Park field event.
We will set up field stations in Queeny Park.
- Date to be determined: Operate from all five Veterans Administration
Medical Center sites. If possible we will work from the VAMC
amateur radio stations. If not, we will work from the parking lots.
Steve said that the Section Emergency Coordinator wants each
ARES® district to hold an intra-district
exercise. We may try to do this in conjunction with our Queeny Park event.
Steve thanked the St. Louis and Suburban Radio Club for including an
ARES® column in its newsletter,
The Printed Circuit.
Steve mentioned the SLSRC hamfest, Winterfest, which will take place
on January 24, 2009. He said that noted amateur radio personailty Bob
Heil will be a guest speaker.
Steve said that St. Louis County ARES®
was being asked to do more and more demonstrations and presentations. He
said that he and several other ARES®
members had just come from an exercises run by the Lutheran Church
Missouri Synod. He said that the group would be giving a digital
demonstration next week, and giving presentations to two small municipalities
in a few months. He asked that anyone interested if giving or helping
with the presentations and/or demonstrations please contact him.
Craig Hirsh, K0CMH, gave a presentation on "Basic Antenna Construction."
Steve said that if you take the ARRL's Amateur Radio Emergency Communications
Course (Level 2) on the Internet, you may ask to be assigned a mentor
who lives in the St. Louis area.
Craig Hirsh will give future presentations on "Battery Chemistry" and
"Antenna Theory".
