PSK31 Tips

  1. We do not need to start each transmission with both parties' call signs. This ties up the frequency and takes up a lot of time.

CHECKING-IN: When there is a pause, simply send your call sign. If the Net Controller sees it, you will get a call back. If you are not heard by the Net Controller, don't worry. The Net Controller will be asking each station who checks in to forward relays. The Net Controller will also be asking each station checking in to make a net call. You can check in during one of those net calls.

HOW TO TRANSMIT: Click the TRANSMIT button on your computer screen and let the program send an "idle tone" for a few seconds before you start typing. WHY? Not everyone's signal is exactly on the same place on the PSK waterfall display. By sending a few seconds of idle tone, this allows others to "click onto" your signal. REMEMBER TO CLICK BACK TO THE Net Controller's SIGNAL LOCATION ON THE WATER FALL WHEN DONE COPYING A STATION THAT YOU HAD TO MOVE FOR. WHY? This will avoid "signal creep" across the waterfall. In other words, you move to receive XYZ. If you do not move back to where you were on the waterfall, your signal will now be lower/higher and XYZ will move to receive you. You will have to move again to receive XYZ, etc. etc. until the whole net is pulled off the waterfall.
